Lancaut SSSI Nature Reserve

Meet on Lancaut lane informal car park to descend for 300m to Lancaut chapel meadow.

Location: Lancaut Lane is off the B4228 (Coleford to Chepstow road) just north of Woodcroft (Wintour's Leap).

Restore meadow surrounds to ancient derelict chapel - cut (brushcutter trained persons) bramble, bracken scrub, rake off to shady compost piles, Possible fire site, rake up debris to encourage meadow regrowth to be grazed by sheep

Greathough Brook, Piano Corner

Take A4136 From Drybrook and at Brierley turn right towards the Pludds.Metal barrier is on the left.
This site is being looked at as a possible fenced trial area for a beaver family. Beavers here would have a dual use- to undertake coppicing for us and so improve the habitat for a range of species and also to hold more water on the site and so help to reduce the amount of water reaching downstream in times of high rain. This would not be a re-introduction but would be a fenced trial site. Beavers have been used to do this in an experimental fenced area in Devon.

From Coleford take B4228, turn right by the Lambsquay Hotel down Lambsquay Road towards Clearwell. Turn left at SO578083 into the Clearwell Caves car park.

Marians Pond Toad crossing

From Coleford take the B4228 to Berry Hill. Approx 300metres before the Christchurch/Bracelands campsite crossroads, go left along a track, bear left and enter the wood through a metal barrier at SO570125. Follow the forest road, take the first left and follow the forest road to the parking area at SO566119

Bring good digging spades if you have one and lots of technical brain power and muscle. Working with the Highways due to the main road so NO DOGS on actual work site Bring High Visibility vests if you have one.

Edgehills GWT Nature Reserve

The 'Wilderness' road sign is one of a kind and on the A4136 at the highest point between Cinderford and Mitcheldean. Drive as high as you can on this road (A4136) and within 100m will be the 'Wilderness' sign, take the unnamed forest track opposite. Continue along forest track for approx.. 1 mile to Forest gate and Edgehills nature reserve.

Heathland restoration - cut and treat birch, cut and leave larch, dig up/ pull up part buried old fence that is hazard to grazing animals. Bonfire dependant on weather (not dry!)

May Hill - National Trust

Head towards the Yew Tree Inn (Clifford's Mesne, Newent, GL18 1JS). When you reach the Inn (it should be on your right), continue to follow the lane up towards the hill. Pass over a cattle grid and continue to follow the lane until you reach a gravelled car park on the right. There should be a metal gate opposite.

From Mitcheldean take Stenders Road (church on your right) up to right hand turn to Wigpool, continue for 1 mile until pine trees run out (and it looks heathy).

Please remember that you must wear steel toe-capped boots and gloves.
Please bring wellington boots if you have them, as many of the sites are rather wet.
Some of the sites are difficult to find and therefore an ordnance survey map will be useful
As a general rule, we will try to do at least some work on wet days so please bring wet weather gear
