Woorgreen and Crabtree Hill
A good day of clearing the small birch and leggy gorse on Crabtree Hill. We will be visiting this site again during the next few weeks as it is a very large reserve and we want to blitz the birch!
We found this female Palmate Newt (Lissotriton helveticus) but Palmate newts are similar to the smooth newt in colour and size, and they can be hard to distinguish between.
Newts are amphibians, breeding in ponds during the spring and spending most of the rest of the year feeding on invertebrates in woodland, hedgerows, marshes and tussocky grassland. They hibernate underground, among tree roots and in old walls.
Piles of logs to provide wildlife sancturies for small creatures. |

Our usual fires cleared out the smaller branches and trees. |
