Darkhill Ironworks Nature Reserve

Grid Ref SO588087

A large team which we split in two - one team went up the hill across the road on the Ellwood side to clear all the small growing birch - the other team were below the Iron Works by the pond where our contractor was cutting down many old, diseased or dead trees which had not been touched for years.

Up on the hill, the birch was cut and piled up as a line of hedging either side of the pathway.

The hedging pile is now a suitable shelter for various creatures. In particular, there are known to be adders nesting in this area as baby adders were seen last summer. It is too cold at the moment for them to emerge but they are there!

The team are having lunch beneath an ancient old Oak tree and , yes, it was raining!
