After a miserable rainy start to the day the sun came out and the heath looked gorgeous! We have been regularly combating the birch over the past few weeks to restore the heathland and we moved to a new area past the trig point and the pines, and in on the right, adjoining a big area we had worked on a lot last year. We cleared mostly larger birch saplings and trees from an area that had been coppiced in the past (for brush destined for Chepstow racecourse) and had two good fires

The straggly birch can be seen and the stumps are painted blue with herbicide.

Clearing and burning opens up the area and encourages heathland plants such as heather, bilberry and low gorse. |

At the end of the day it is satisfying to take a moment to enjoy the sunshine! |
