Birch Wood

Grid Ref SO 6436 1522

We all gathered at Birch Wood which is near to Steam Mills Lake. Our tasks were to remove as many tree guards as we could and to take out as many small birch as we could. It was very mucky underfoot but no rain in the morning. We saw a heron flying high over us.

The team are looking over the site at the start of the day. Birch Wood is a Forestry nature reserve and Herdwick sheep graze in there during the summer.

There were very many tree guards to remove. We piled them up and then had to organise ourselves as a relay to carry and pass them over up quite a steep and rugged hill to lay them on a wide track so that they could be collected by a forestry truck and trailer.

This is one of many small conifers which is still in the shape of its tree guard!
