Pan Tod, Ruardean Hill
A wildlife survey was done in glorious sunshine on Pan Tod by the Dean Green Team at the invitation of the Friends of Pan Tod.
The wildlife meadow is magnificent and many species were found and Friends of Pan Tod do a sterling job whereby they mow tracks around the meadow to provide an interesting walk round. Pan Tod is the highest point in the Forest of Dean and stands at 951 feet with stunning views to the north and east. There is a beacon on the top, a viewpoint which a crouched figure of a miner with a topograph sitting on his back and a memorial to remember freeminers who died in mining accidents in the Forest of Dean.

We found a Pyramidal Orchid in the flower meadow. Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis) is one of the most successful orchid species on roadside verges, and colonises other disturbed habitats like airfields, quarries and reservoirs. Apparently, Pan Tod used to be a quarry but it was filled in with the debris from a water reservoir was made further along the hill |
