Foxes Bridge Bog

Grid Ref SO 6209 1187

There had been quite a number of fascines delivered to Phase 1 of Foxes Bridge bog and we were moving them to reinforce the leaky dams on Blackpool Brook. It was hard work on the rough terrain!

This was our pile of fascines. A fascine is a rough bundle of brushwood used for strengthening an earthen structure, or making a path across uneven or wet terrain. Typical uses are protecting the banks of streams or, as in our case, creating leaky dams.

Bogs are unique wetland ecosystems characterized by their waterlogged, acidic, and nutrient-poor conditions. They are typically found in areas with high rainfall and poor drainage. Bog formation begins when vegetation, primarily mosses, start to grow in water-saturated environments.

A bundle of fascines are now laid across the brook.
