The Bearse - Orles Wood

SO573058

It has been along time since we had been in Orles Wood. We last visited here on the 28th October 2015 (Click here to see this visit)

Around half of Orles Wood is registered ancient woodland. Over 3,000 flints dating from the Mesolithic (10,000BC - 4,000BC) to the Bronze Age (2,500BC – 700BC) have been recovered from the very edge of Orles Wood.

However, today we were back as our contractors had been in to cut down the trees which were completely smothering the pond! We cleared all the fallen trees away from the pond into the surrounding wood. We did find numerous toads and frogs including a little shrew during our work.

The pond is hardly visible under the cut trees as we started work. All of the branches were moved to the tree line..

The team are gathered!

We also used the larger logs to create a leaky dam as the pond had dried up in the summer so we are hoping this might solve that problem.
