Autumn/Winter Programme 2015

May Hill - National Trust

May Hill, National Trust site near Clifford's Mesne,Newent.

Directions: Head towards the Yew Tree Inn (Clifford's Mesne, Newent, GL18 1JS). When you reach the Inn it should be on your right, continue to follow the lane up towards the hill. Pass over a cattle grid and continue to follow the lane until you reach a gravelled car park on the right. There should be a metal gate opposite.

The task to be carried out is the removal of young birch scrub on May Hill Common to allow the extent of bracken cutting to increase. The scrub will be removed with the use of hand tools including bow saws and loppers. The cuttings will be burnt. Larger trees difficult to remove with hand tools can be removed by the NT Ranger with a chainsaw.

Tidenham Chase, The Park Nature Reserve

Take the B4228 from Coleford towards Chepstow. Just after Hewelsfield you will see a brown tourist sign on the left and the FC car park on your right

MEET:10am at  FC car park at Tidenham

Cut, treat and burn young birch trees. This is an daunting venture but the rewards are huge as under that birch is the heathland everyone has been wanting to see.

Take A4136 From Drybrook and at Brierley turn right towards the Pludds.Metal barrier is on the left

Scrub cutting on butterfly bank.

Followed after lunch by a Birthday celebration for a local 'lad'!

Marians Pond Toad crossing

From Coleford take the B4228 to Berry Hill. Approx 300metres before the Christchurch/Bracelands campsite crossroads, go left along a track, bear left and enter the wood through a metal barrier at SO570125. Follow the forest road, take the first left and follow the forest road to the parking area at SO566119

Removing broken toad fence and erecting new one along main road. Bring good digging spades if you have one and lots of technical brain power and muscle.

Working with the Highways due to the main road so NO DOGS on actual work site. Bring High Visibility vests if you have one.

From Parkend take B4431 towards Blakeney, park by barrier opposite entrance to Mallards Pike car park.

Cutting small patches into coarser uncut grassy areas to sow Hay Rattle and a few other species to provide nectar

Foxes Bridge Bog planted area

Directions take B 4226 from Cinderford and mid way between Dilke Hospital and Speech House Hotel,turn left into a small FC parking area. Either park here so as not to get blocked in and walk, or drive through gateway and keep right on forest road and park along forest road.

Removing and replanting small oaks and blocking drains to re wet the area for mosses and other wet loving plants
